Rome Sights, Sounds and Hotels

The Catacombs of St Callixtus in Rome is a network of tunnels and galleries that stretch for 19 km underground where early Christians were buried with approximately half a million tombs and a number of sepulchral chambers. Paintings, sculptures and symbols of the fish and the dove give evidence of life as a Christian in those times. Pope John XXIII described these funerary tunnels as "The most venerable and most renowned of Rome". Although often crowded with groups of tourists the remarkable tunnels are well worth visiting, especially the famous Cubicula of the Sacraments with its 3rd-century frescoes.
